  7. Remember when those guys out West
  8. With their longish hair and paisley vests
  9. Were starting up, straight out of UCB?
  10. They used those Motorola chips
  11. Which at the time were really hip
  12. And looked upon the world through VME.
  13. Their first attempt ran like a pig
  14. But it was the start of something big;
  15. They called the next one the Sun-2
  16. And though they only sold a few
  17. It soon gave birth unto the new
  18. Sun-3 which was their pride
  19. And now they're singing

  22.     "Bye, bye, SunOS 4.1.3!
  23.      ATT System V has replaced BSD.
  24.      You can cling to the standards of the industry
  25.      But only if you pay the right fee --
  26.      Only if you pay the right fee . . ."

  28. The hardware wasn't all they sold.
  29. Their Berkeley port was solid gold
  30. And interfaced with System V, no less!
  31. They implemented all the stuff
  32. That Berkeley thought would be enough
  33. Then added RPC and NFS.
  34. It was a lot of code to cram
  35. Into just four megs of RAM.
  36. The later revs were really cool
  37. With added values like SunTools
  38. But then they took us all for fools
  39. By peddling Solaris . . .
  40. And they were singing,

  44. They took a RISC and kindled SPARC.
  45. The difference was like light and dark.
  46. The Sun-4s were the fastest and the best.
  47. The user base was having fun
  48. Installing SunOS 4.1
  49. But what was coming no one could have guessed.
  50. The installed base was sound
  51. And software did abound.
  52. While all the hackers laughed and played
  53. Already plans were being made
  54. To make the dubious "upgrade"
  55. To Sun's new Solaris . . .
  56. And Sun was singing,

  60. The cartridge tapes were first to go --
  61. The CD-ROM's a must, you know
  62. And floppy drives will soon go out the door.
  63. I tried to call and ask them why
  64. But they took away my TTY
  65. And left my modem lying on the floor.
  66. While they were on a roll
  67. They moved the damned Control.
  68. The Ethernet's now twisted pair
  69. Which no one uses anywhere.
  70. ISDN is still more rare --
  71. The bandwidth's even less!
  72. But still they're singing

  76. But worst of all is what they've done
  77. To software that we used to run
  78. Like dbx and even /bin/cc.
  79. Compilers now have license locks
  80. Wrapped up in OpenWindows crocks --
  81. We even have to pay for GCC!
  82. The applications broke;
  83. /usr/local went up in smoke.
  84. The features we've depended on
  85. Before too long will all be gone
  86. But Sun, I'm sure, will carry on
  87. By peddling Solaris,
  88. Forever singing,
